to the Grupo Lasem website. Our Group began in 1947 with the establishment
of INDUSTRIAL QUÍMICA LASEM. Over the years, the Group diversified
into two main areas of activity:
• Chemicals: We manufacture additives for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals,
food, lubricants and plastics. Our customers are the major multinational companies
within these sectors.
• Food: We manufacture frozen dough (for bread and cakes), industrial chocolate
and cocoa derivatives, and raw materials for the bread-making, cake-making, and
hotel and restaurant sectors.
In 2002, work began on the construction of a new factory complex bringing
together different areas of production and the new corporate building.
This is where our company headquarters now operates from. At the same
time, international companies in Chile, Portugal and Malaysia joined

APLIENA
S.A. is a company that specialises in the development of cutting-edge enzymatic
applications for the food sector. Our aim is to promote and educate people
about the application of enzymatic technology for food use. In the flour/bread-making
sector, we have latest-generation enzymatic developments that can be adapted
to suit every specific need.
We work in conjunction with enzyme-producing companies that allocate a
large part of their budget to research and we are constantly developing
within the flour/bread-making sector, as regards to flour treatment and
its preparation for milling and the requirements of flour manufacturers
as well as craft bread-making, industrial bread-making and the latest
techniques: freezing, part-baked, fermentation part-baked and simultaneous
cooking.
We also work with the most advanced enzyme technology via ongoing development
that makes it possible to adapt to each harvest and to the variations
in wheat mixes that occur in milling composition throughout the year.
For APLIENA, every customer is a new project. This is why we manufacture
enzyme products to suit the needs of each customer. We work with you right
from the beginning of each harvest, studying your needs and suggesting
the best enzyme solution. We keep in touch periodically and do research
and tests that we plan in advance with our customers. This means that
we can carry out exhaustive controls of the qualities of your flours and
how they perform during the bread-making process, and we can suggest suitable
changes and the ideal solution, if necessary.
Our laboratories and experimental bakery are always at your disposal for
any technical query, which will be handled with the same level of interest
as the service provided to our customers. We monitor the regularity of
the characteristics and the performance of your products (flours, enhancers,
mixes, etc.).
At our Castellgalí plant, we have all the necessary manufacturing
and laboratory elements for the correct development of products and functions,
thus enabling us to offer our customers the individual attention they
deserve.
ATRIAN
BAKERS. On March 11th, 1993, as a continuation of the businesses of Chari Alimentación
in Castellar del Vallès, UNIFRES, S.L. was founded and immediately converted
into a frozen pastry company on the strength of its new owners’ firm
conviction that this would be an important sector of the future.
For ten years UNIFRES experienced a period of steady growth, which prompted the
company to move its production plant to Terrassa and to expand its operations.
Currently, with the firm aim of consolidating its position in the sector’s
main markets, 14,000,000 Euros have been invested in a new factory in the industrial
complex that the LASEM GROUP has built in Castellgalí.
Under the trade name of ATRIAN BAKERS, the company is managed by some of the
most renowned professionals in the sector and has a workforce of 120 employees.
It is equipped with the most sophisticated modern machinery, some of which has
been purpose-built and is unique on the market. The company will sell around
220 products and a turnover of 60,000,000 euros is expected to be achieved over
the next five years. To reach this objective, ATRIAN has a subsidiary in Portugal
which works under the name of ATRIAN INDUSTRIA ALIMENTAR, S.A. and in which it
holds the majority of shares. This factory makes Portuguese specialties and bread
for western Spain and also handles the distribution in Portugal of the cakes
that are made in Castellgalí.
ATRIAN INTERNACIONAL, S.A. was set up in order to maximise export opportunities.
The company has agents in the U.S.A., Asia, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
We are sure that the arrival of ATRIAN BAKERS in the frozen bakery and bread
market will bring about a revolution in the range of products, packaging, flavours,
ease of use, and quality, setting the standard for the whole market.
COLASEM
AIE was set up in Terrassa in 1997. It deals mainly with power generation.
The energy produced by COLASEM AIE is put to two uses:
• Power supply for the companies of the Group: Grup Lasem, Gestió Industrial
Química Lasem and Atrian Bakers. This guarantees
the companies a reliable power supply and means that they are not prone
to shutdowns due to outages caused by electricity distribution companies.
• Excess energy is sold to electricity distribution companies,
under the Special Regime for Electricity Production.
COLASEM AIE generates electricity using a cogeneration system based on internal
combustion engines. This is a highly energy-efficient system. Apart from electricity
production, cogeneration results in other kinds of energy, which are sold to
the rest of the Group’s companies:
• Steam: The gases produced by the engines are injected into a
boiler. This produces steam, which is used in the production processes
of the Group’s companies.
• Hot water: The engine cooling water is used to supply hot water
to the Group’s companies.
Finally, it is important to point out that COLASEM AIE is highly environmentally-friendly.
The company’s raw material is the clean energy source offered by Natural
Gas, and the end result is highly energy efficient.
DCI was established in 1982 with the goal of becoming a major player in the commercial
sphere. The aim of the company is to import and sell raw food materials from
European companies. It is the exclusive representative for these companies
throughout Spain.
At that time, when Spain was not yet a member of the Common Market, the company
promoted closer collaboration of companies and products to the market. This made
DCI a pioneer in the introduction of products that were later to become leaders
in terms of consumption and sales, such as non-dairy cream, silicone paper for
baking, powdered egg, deodorised pork lard, etc. Above all else, the company
was responsible for implementing the use of enzymes into a multitude of processes,
thus facilitating and improving both production and the quality of the finished
products.
Many of the companies it represents now have their own subsidiaries in Spain,
thanks to the excellent work DCI did in promoting their products all those years
ago.
In 1998 Grupo Lasem became a shareholder and began a process of promoting its
own brands, some of which were bought from leading companies in the sector, to
be produced in the new partner’s factories. In the year 2000, Grupo Lasem
took complete control of the company and began to gradually distribute the company’s
trading base among the other companies in the Group.
DCI is once again producing doughnuts for sale on the Spanish market. It also
exports them and supplies its other group partner, ATRIAN BAKERS, who sells them
as frozen doughnuts.
GLOBAL
FOODS was set up in Santiago de Chile in November 2001 between Grup Lasem (80%)
and Crialan Corporation (20%) for the production of frozen bread and pastries
and for the distribution of the cakes made in Spain by Atrian Bakers.
It defines itself as a people-based organisation that responds to the modern
food needs of modern-day Chilean society and wants to react efficiently to new
habits and values by manufacturing and distributing deep-frozen products of the
highest quality.
Towards this end, the company has the ultimate in production lines for bread,
rolls and pastries, as well as two cold tunnels and a storage chamber for finished
products with a capacity for over 750 pallets at -20°C.
The aim of GLOBAL FOODS in these first few years is to gain a 10% share of its
target market. To do this the company has the aforementioned machinery and a
team of 22 employees, which is expected to be increased to 35 by the end of 2005.
INDUSTRIAL
QUÍMICA LASEM started out in 1947 as Laboratorios de Análisis
y Síntesis Esteve-Martí (LASEM.) At its first factory in Barcelona,
the company manufactured PHTHALIMIDE and PHTHALAZONE for use as vasodilators
in the pharmaceutical industry.
It moved to Terrassa in 1973. Changes were being made to its shareholder base
and at the same time, the company was evolving towards the production of esters
for the foodstuffs, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries as well as for other,
more industrial uses such as lubricating oils and greases, rubber, textiles,
tanning, dyes, plastics, veterinary applications, etc.
Most of the raw materials used in our processes are fatty acids that are obtained
from plant oils such as coconut, palm and palmite, which are grown in Southeast
Asia, and from olive oil, which is typical of the Mediterranean.
I.Q. LASEM is present in over 40 countries on four continents, and exports most
of what it produces.
In 2003 I.Q. LASEM opened its new facilities in Castellgalí,
Barcelona.
At this complex, which is where most of Grupo Lasem’s production takes
place,
I.Q. LASEM has a 30,000 tonne capacity, and a team made
up of 50 employees.
The recent creation of LASEM ASIA SDN BHO in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,
is part
of the strategic plan for international expansion.
The
establishment process for LASEM CHILE S.A. began at the beginning of 2002 in
a series of conversations between Josep Betriu, representing Grup Lasem, and
Chileans Dante Superbi and Reinaldo Cabrera, both of whom are professionals
of long-standing experience in the Chilean Bread and Bakery market. These conversations
resulted in the formation of a company with Grup Lasem and the Chilean partners
as the major shareholders. The company was established on 26 June 2002 and
the first sales were made on July 18th of the same year.
LASEM CHILE S.A. defines itself as a company where quality and service are
of prime importance, in the highly-competitive Chilean market.
At present, the company employs 28 people. We sell a complete range of enhancers,
premixes and bread and cake bases.
The aim of LASEM CHILE S.A. is to be a company that is wholly oriented towards
serving our customers and to be constantly bringing innovations to the Chilean
bread and bakery market, as well as to work in conjunction with our customers
and to contribute to their success.
LASENOR It is a private Spanish company that results from a link between two firms
with many years’ experience in the sectors of lecithin and its derivatives
and oleochemicals applied to the field of emulsifiers.
LASENOR works together with its customers in a very personal style, step-by-step
and with three basic requirements always in mind: Quality, Technology and Service.
To get the results we want we have an excellent and highly qualified team of
chemists and engineers, who have many years of experience in food industry processes.
In the foodstuffs market, quality is without a doubt the main requirement. All
of the sectors of the company strive to achieve quality: Production, Sales, Distribution,
Technical Support and Research and Development. LASENOR works in accordance with
the strict ISO 9001:2000 standards and under a Traceability and Identity Preservation
Programme for non-GM products.
Our Quality Control department carries out chemical, physical and microbiological
checks on all raw materials and finished products.
It would be hard to name a product that is more useful in food processes than
an emulsifier. The multifunctional character of an emulsifier means that it can
be used as a stabilising agent, crystallisation modifier, rheological regulator,
lubricant, disperser, anti-foaming agent, airing agent, etc. LASENOR produces,
develops and applies emulsifiers. All emulsifiers are of natural origin, be they
Lecithin or produced by the synthesis of fatty acid esters and their derivatives.
Our Chemists will use their experience and knowledge of the system to decide
on the best option for obtaining a stable emulsion. The use of compounds that
are specific to each system is one of the most important tasks we carry out together
with our customers.

OFICE laboratory began operations in 1947 as a point of reference in the analysis
and testing of wheat, flour and other cereals for breadmaking.
Over time, and as a result of the growing demand for analysis and testing
services, the laboratory was extended and consolidated in new fields of work.
It specialised in the areas of agrarian production and distribution, animal
nutrition, human foodstuffs and the pharmaceutical industry.
OFICE specialises in both analysis and providing professional, technological
and legal consultation with the aim of solving the day-to-day problems in
the sector.
In November 2003, OFICE opened its new facilities in Castellgalí (Barcelona
province), where it has a modern premises with the latest technology and
a highly-qualified team who guarantee quality in all of the services they
provide, using a management system backed by ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 standards.
